HS Design Team Meeting - May 26, 2010

The HS Design Team met at West Elementary School. The group continued the discussion on Design Criteria and the adjacencies and uses of those spaces. Wold showed us the updated plan diagram for the new high school. Changes had been made to the diagram to allow for the changes the group had suggested. The plan was improved and showcased an abundance of natural light in common areas as well as classroom areas. There was continued discussion about the location of locker banks and natural supervision of student areas, the main entrance, outdoor spaces, and grounds. Changes to the design were suggested for the next meeting (June 9, 2010).

HS Design Team Meeting - May 12, 2010

The High School Design Team met at West Elementary. We are making progress on Design Criteria as it relates to the : Entry, Student Commons, Media Center, Groupings or Clusters, and the Future Plan. Consideration was given to all design criteria related to adjacencies (what spaces should be next to or near certain spaces); what spaces should be accessible after hours; what spaces should be locked off after school hours.
Wold Architects showed us the first plan diagram. How exciting!! This was our first look at what could be our new high school. The group analyzed the plan and critiqued the design and spaces. Now Wold will go back and make adjustments to the plan diagram for the next meeting (May 26, 2010).

Elementary/Middle School Design Committee Meeting

The Elementary/Middle School Design Committee met on Tuesday, May 18th. We saw a plan of what the possible bus and parent drop-off routes could look like along 2nd Street. With some changes to the current sidewalk, a paved parking lot and designated bus and parent parking we feel we are close to a solution that will keep our kids safe and also be cost conscious. We also spent some time looking at building diagrams and trying to get a feel for how the new buildings will work. We will meet again on June 1st.

Elementary/Middle School Design Committee Meeting

The Elementary/Middle School Design team met on Tuesday of this week. Most of our meeting was centered on where to have parents drop students off and where to have the buses drop students off. Should this be the same location, or two different ones? We also talked about whether or not there should be separate entrances for the Elementary and Middle School students and what a challenge the current building has with its many entrances and exits. We looked briefly at several different models for the Elementary, 1) pre-k through grade 5 2) pre-k through grade 4 and 3) kindergarten through grade 5. Our next meeting is May 18th.

HS Design Team Meeting

The HS Design Team continues to meet at the Elementary West building as an attempt to feel inspired in our future high school space.
We continue to review and work on the Mission Statement and Beliefs and Values that will guide us in our planning.
At our last meeting, we broke into groups and attempted to design our high school space with small puzzle pieces that were the scale of classrooms, gymnasium, offices, science labs, etc. Those finished “puzzles” were photographed and were the topic of conversation at this meeting.
We noted similarities and differences in concepts and placement of key pieces with respect to spaces that are used during the school day (classrooms, labs, ) and those spaces that are used after the school day (gym, commons) and the common spaces that are used both during the day and after the school day.
We discussed the layout of the building to allow for “quiet spaces” such as classrooms and Media Center. And “noisy spaces” such as music, shops, art, and phy ed.
Also related to spaces and layout, was discussion about how these spaces affect supervision, security and being able to lock off the classroom portion of the building for after school events.
We also discussed outdoor spaces such as parking and fields.
There was discussion about future expansion and planning spaces to allow for more parking, more classrooms, etc. It is clear that the building site will have the most influence on the design of the building.
Our next meeting is May 12, 2010.
